Gayab

After a quiet Quarter II of 2004, get ready for an action packed Quarter III from Ram Gopal Verma. Starting with Tusshar Kapoor starrer 'Gayab' [earlier titled Vishnu Prasad Gayab Ho Gaya], next 3 months will also see the release of experimental twin flicks 'Galti Se', 'Jaan Bujh Ke' [Anil Kapoor, Suchitra Krishnamurthy] and Naach [Abhishek Bachchan, Antara Mali]. 'Gayab' comes in the wake of four medium budget productions of RGV in recent times - Darna Mana Hai [average], Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon [flop], Ek Haseena Thi [average to flop] and Ab Tak Chappan [above average]. Taking a cue from Mr. India, that dealt with a similar theme of an ordinary man getting the powers that make him invisible, 'Gayab' has a perfect casting of Tusshar Kapoor in the lead role, Antara Mali as the heroine and Raman Trikha, Raghuveer Yadav and Govind Namdeo in the supporting roles. Co-produced by K Sera Sera and presented by Sahara Manoranjan, 'Gayab' is directed by Prawaal Raman, who redefined the mainstream Bollywood with 'Darna Mana Hai'. Gayab has music by Ajay-Atul and popular background music composer Amar Mohile who has also composed for 'Om' and 'Thoda Tum Badlo Thoda Hum' in recent times. Taabish Romani does the lyrics while Nitin Raikwar gets a song to write. After experimenting with Ek Haseena Thi and Ab Tak Chappan that were songless and no music albums were released, 'Gayab' has a fair dose of songs incorporated in the narrative.

One factor common across all the tracks of 'Gayab' is it's extraordinary orchestra that precedes the actual rendition of the song. Possible reason for this could be Amar Mohile at the helm who specializes in giving background music. That's the reason why there is a longish musical arrangement before the title song 'Gayab Hoke Sab Dikhta Hai' begins. Composed by Ajay-Atul, it is sung with amazing intensity by Kunal Ganjawala who is in the thick of action off late. Lyrics by Taabish Romani take a number of variations from being sad to dominating while Kunal compliments these moods effectively. A situational song, it should look great on screen.

With 'Tanha', it is the turn of Amar Mohile to be seated at the musician chair. The track is about a guy who just can't be away from his beloved. Though the track is not in the league of 'Tanhaayee' from 'Dil Chahta Hai', Sonu Nigam sings this number with perfection that has strong influence of Tamil style of music. A hummable track, it does remind of 'Aasman Kehta Hai Rab Se' from 'Mast' but the similarity just ends there. Ajay-Atul return in the alternate tracks with 'Dilkash' that again has Kunal Ganjawala behind the mike. A love song, it has good rhythm and impresses with it's overall arrangements. As the previous two tracks, this too has a number of variations and deviates from the routine 'ishq-vishq' kind of formula. The duet of Kunal and Shweta Pandit give their best shot in this westernized track, which is not hummable or catchy but has a good audio value.

Amar Mohile returns with a Nitin Raikwar written Hinglish track - 'Main Love Tumse' sung by Vinod Rathod and a female who has not been credited on the cover. A love song, it fails to register and seems to be a track where everyone in the number has over-indulged, just in order to make something different. At first couple of instances, the song sound strange and the perception doesn't change even after a few more listening. No, this track is not something that will cheer you up !! 'Superman' by Ajay Atul is a track that should sound and look hilarious on screen. There are references to Superman, Spiderman, James Bond & Robin-hood [through their signature tunes] by the girl who is completely smitten by the hero in her life. Tusshar Kapoor as all these heroes - now this should be one thing to watch out for on screen. Sunidhi Chauhan renders this song well while Kunal does a good supporting role. Another situational track that is designed just for the big screen !

The score of 'Gayab' ends with a background music track - 'Rampage Notes' that is haunting, thrilling, entertaining and chilling in turns. A fast moving track, it shows the prowess of Amar Mohile when it comes to giving background score for a thriller. The track is indeed 'rampaging' and keeps one occupied for its 3 minutes duration. To continue in the same vein, there is a remix of the title track of 'Ek Haseena Thi' that excites you yet again. An excellently composed westernized track by Amar Mohile, it has some really different lyrics by Abbas Tyrewala and is sung with perfection by Dominique [who is splendid] and Zubin. One of the better theme tracks to have been composed in recent times, one wonders why the album of 'Ek Haseena Thi' was never released !!

The chances of Gayab's music should definitely increase if the movie does well at the box office as these situational songs are bound to look well in the narrative of the movie. Overall, the album of 'Gayab' may not have too much to hum around but it surely has enough punch to make you look forward to watching the songs on screen.
